With the (somewhat sad) lack of breakfast options, we relied on Plenny’s (protein bars) to get the day started. Not quite the same as a long, slow breakfast, but enough to get moving.
The morning opened with dark clouds and a steady wind, which, as it turned out, was a blessing. This stage offers very little cover, so on a hot day it would be a completely different experience. Out here, you’re exposed for most of the walk.
We started from Sleen-Noord, and arrived to picturesque town of Sleen quite fast. The landscape from thereon is consistent: wide, green fields stretching out in all directions, with very little variation. Compared to earlier stages, and especially to more nature-heavy trails, this one feels more functional than scenic.
To be honest, this wasn’t our favourite stage. The lack of natural variety makes it feel longer than it is, and walking past large gardens with guard dogs barking as you go by creates a slightly uneasy atmosphere at times. It’s not dramatic, but it does take away from the sense of calm you might expect.
Still, we made it - all 25 km of it.
But we did have the loveliest lunch in De Kastanjehoeve, exactly in the middle. No dogs inside, but we enjoyed a thee and a toast outside with the friendliest service.
We arrived in Coevorden, and headed straight to train station to start the adventure back to Amsterdam.
Lessons learned:
☕ Food tip: Best tea pitstop.
🌲 Mood: If you like the open fields and roadside stroll, this is for you.
